We are often getting asked what is the difference between an Advertising Network (Google AdSense, SmartAD) and an Affiliate Network (Commission Junction, Pay4results).
In principle, they both are Ad Networks and it seems they are pretty much the same and even similar, but indeed there are some important differences.
Being part of any type of Ad Network is a good way to monetize your web resources and earn additional revenue.
Before we go on, a quick overview about some of the important terms we will run into:
CPM - Cost per Mille/Thousand. You get X eur for every 1000 people who see the advertisement.
CPC - Cost per Click. You get paid when someone clicks on the advertisement.
CPA - Cost per Action. You get paid when a person performs a specific action on Advertiser website.
CPL - Cost per Lead. You provide the Advertiser with a prospect, a lead, but not an actual customer. Advertiser still has to sell their product or service to the lead.
Advertising Networks work with websites only and supported ad formats are banners, sometimes also text ads.
To start displaying ads, webmaster has to allocate a space - ad position - on the website affiliate marketing business code and install a special code that will control the ads that are shown on website.
The control over the ads displayed is small. Some Advertising Networks do ask before launching new campaign on the website whether or not site owner wants to run it. Some networks have possibility to specify and block certain types of campaigns from the reporting interface.
Advertising Networks typically have a campaign mentality and they rarely run always on campaigns. Advertisers approach Advertising Networks if they want to run a campaign and allocate a specific budget that they are ready to risk with to see if desired results will actually come./wpcol_1half wpcol_1half_end id="" class="" style=""Affiliate Network
Affiliate Networks typically pay a commission for a paid action (purchase at e-shop, registration, application etc.) and work on CPA basis (either CPL or CPS). Affiliate Networks also run CPC campaigns and get involved with CPM campaigns. Very often Affiliate Networks are also paying a hybrid commission, for example CPC + CPL (get paid for a click + lead) or CPL + CPS (get paid for a lead and for the sale).
Affiliate Networks monetize a large variety of internet traffic. Apart from websites that carry banners or textads, Affiliate Networks also work with Social Media, Search Engines, Email lists and other internet channels. Ad formats that could be used include banners, textlinks, textads, contextual articles or even QR codes. Advertising Networks often act as normal affiliates of Affiliate Networks.
Affiliate Networks allow high control over any web inventory that the publisher/affiliate is using in certain campaign. It is up to the webmaster when and what campaigns they would like to run and how many campaigns at the same time they want to participate in.
Advertisers run programs with Affiliate Networks that are typically always on. No special promotion is needed to get started with Affiliate campaign. Advertisers often treat the Affiliate Networks as normal Resellers of their products or services./wpcol_1half_end
