What happens tomorrow when you have thousands of new impressions and want those incorporated into your Redshift database as well?

The key is to build your script in such a way that it can also identify incremental?updates to your data. You can set your script up as?a cron job?or continuous loop to keep pulling down new data as it appears.

Redshift is totally awesome, but sometimes you need to start smaller or optimize for different things. In this case, many people choose to get started with Postgres, which is an open source RDBMS that uses nearly identical SQL syntax to Redshift. Facebook: love it or hate it, it's arguably?the leader?in the social media world.

However, for small businesses and brands, the?constant algorithm changes and reduced efficiency of organic reach can make Facebook a challenging medium for their social media marketing efforts. So how best to tackle this media giant? Is it worth the pay-to-play? model, or should brands look to other platforms for promotion?

Let's take a look at Porterfield's personal Facebook ad strategy that she says generates at least $1,000 per every $200 Facebook ad spend.

Here's how the Facebook algorithm actually works,? says Porterfield. If you're not in the news feed, people aren't seeing your posts.? Porterfield suggests posting to Facebook two to five times a day; however you can post more or less depending on whether your audience is engaging with them. It's not how often you're posting; it's what people are doing with your posts.?

Only about 1-2 percent of Facebook page fans see your posts and only a few of those may actually engage. So how do you make sure your posts are seen?

How does Facebook determine engagement??Likes, comments, shares, and clicks.

The more engagement you get on your posts, the more likely they'll appear in the newsfeed. Porterfield emphasizes that in order to gain engagement, you need to post more native posts that your fans and followers can relate to. Posts that are all about you? won't garner many clicks, Porterfield states. Know your audience's trigger points, let them behind the scenes.?

Here's Porterfield's strategy for a creating a successful Facebook ad + email campaign:

Create an irresistible giveaway or offer.?The giveaway should be whatever your audience will love and will work for your business. In her example, Porterfield uses a 60-minute live webinar.

Create an opt-in/lead page. LeadPages is a great option to create compelling opt-in pages.

Deliver the goods, aka the offer. Porterfield suggests teaching a lot for free and selling a little. She gives a live 60-minute webinar for free, and then plugs a $97 item at the end of her webinar. I definitely sell because I've earned it,? says Porterfield, but you also have to give your audience what they want.?

Follow up with a series of emails. Deliver the giveaway and use email marketing to seal the deal.?

It's important to know where your audience spends time on Facebook. Porterfield suggests using the Facebook Search function to find the pages that your audience members like and engage with. How? Simply type in the search box, Pages liked by your business name or competitor here fans? ? or ? Pages liked by people who like your biz name here or competitor business name here ? or ? Favorite interests of people who like?? This will give you similar pages, competitors, and interests of your fans or people you'd like to target. You can use this valuable information later when creating a Facebook Ad.

Porterfield highly suggests creating Facebook Ads because everything is clickable and customizable, and you can control the call-to-action. Your ad should promote your giveaway, then link to an opt-in form and/or lead page, which will grow and build your email list in the process.

Images tell a story ? be sure to use a hi-res photo or graphic in your ad, and stick to the Facebook recommended sizing and text limitations.

When choosing placement options for your ad,?only?place it in the news feed.

Under Interests,? you want to type in all of those pages and interests you looked up while conducting a search (see above). Your ad will then target fans that like similar pages to your own or your competitors' pages.

Target your ad to 175 thousand to 1 million people. If you're a local business,? says Porterfield, wide-spread reach is not going to happen, so don't worry about it.?

2) From non-fan to lead: $3-$8 ? It's cheaper to advertise to your own fan base,? Porterfield says.

3) From lead to customer: $10-$30. Example: $200 on ads = 10 sales = $20/customer.

Porterfield strongly suggests sealing the deal? with email. After you've created your Facebook Ad, gained sign-ups/opt-ins, and delivered your giveaway, don't stop there! Follow up with emails thanking attendees or signups, and other emails. Porterfield says after a webinar, she emails attendees or signups as many as five times after the webinar has happened (but no more than once a week). She sends two emails with a replay of the webinar, a last chance? email to view the webinar before she takes it off of her website, and another if the recipient hasn't responded or purchased.

Note the demand in the error:..Ads API. Please update to the latest version: v2.8. But I have done this. Can someone please tell me, what on Earth is going on?

I have found a(n annoying) solution. I went to github and manually downloaded the latest version.

This is ridiculous. I followed the official installation instructions on -api/sdks (create file incl. explicit version details ?> execute terminal command php install -no-dev). I don't see why this does not work.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Or am I one of the few, for whom automatic installation did not lead to the right version?

I think this might have to do with the login part. When initializing the Facebook class here,

you did not specify the API version to use - so it falls back to the lowest API version your app can use. Likely that messes up things later when you use the resulting token to make calls to the Marketing API.

Most books on Facebook delve deeply into the community and social aspects but don't really cover the different beast that is Facebook Advertising. While you need to understand how to address and network with the Facebook community in order to market to them, to run any kind of Facebook Advertising campaign you really need in-depth information on how to set it up and effectively make use of all the various targeting options. Marty covers all this in his own inimitable, yet accessible style, providing an easy read yet an invaluable reference tool. I've heard him speak at many conferences over the years and he's always engaging, yet thought provoking, guaranteed to take a concept by the horns and make you think of it in a different way. His written style is the same way and your approach to Facebook Advertising will never be the same.

While newer marketers, small businesses or entrepreneurs might find all this a bit daunting and technical, learning to truly take advantage of the the Facebook Advertising platform will put you way ahead of most of your competitors and allow you reach one of the largest, and still growing, groups of potential customers on the web. Don't let that opportunity pass you by. Marty and his team have run hundreds of Facebook campaigns for companies large and small, and have learned a lot along the way. He shares a lot of that learning here, so we can also take it and use it to our advantage.

I got this book, thinking it might be helpful in finding some easy ways to help my wife promote her modest home business. Shows how little I understand about Facebook. This book is really meant for serious business folks who are looking to maximize a Facebook presense and are willing to spend for it.

I'll be honest, after getting through a chunk of the book, there just wasn't much reason to go on, because it was not what I needed. BUT, that being said, the book is excellent at what it exists for and I would still very much recommend for the right audience. This is not a "Facebook advertising for Dummies" book...it is detailed, sometimes a little technical and not a super fast read. You need to be serious about using Facebook advertising. If you are, you'll find the book useful. It even comes with a few modest coupons to help you get started with some of the services discussed in the book. This does make one wonder how "objective" the author is...but there wasn't anything so overtly skewed that the book loses credibility.

Sorry I can't give you more details. I just bought it expecting one thing and really got another...totally my fault.

The first edition of this book was published in August 2011. I read it in October and some of the system changes Facebook implemented a few weeks ago have already outdated some of the material. The author references the fast paced nature of Facebook's evolution many times and writes about some of the legal uncertainties advertisers face in the future of targeted online marketing. This indicates that many updates and editions of this book will be released, let the buyer be aware of this and make certian that your are getting as current information as possible. Having said that, there is also some very timeless, relevant and sound advertising/marketing knowledge to be gleaned from this book.

This would be an overwhelming book to a person in a small start up. On the positive side the author's experience is an excellent resource of examples and how to apply market knowledge to advertising campaigns. However, it is a lot of information to digest for a beginner or inexperienced advertiser. It would be a bit like drinking from a fire-hose and probably bring a beginner to a standstill.

I would have also liked to have seen the information organized better. I like to have books like this available as quick references that I can pull off the shelf and quickly look up and specific area, but it is just not set up that way. On the other hand there is a wealth of great information here, some in didactic principle and some in the form of (real and fictitious) examples.

Bottom line; I would recommend this book for people with 'some experience' to 'expert marketers and advertisers' there are nuggets in this book that nearly anyone can learn from.

If you're a new start up or a mom & pop shop be aware that this could be information overload. You might try some of the free video sources just to get your feet wet (set a budget that would be equivalent to what your comfortable paying for a little education) just search for 'How to advertise on Facebook.' After getting something going, then I would suggest reading this book. At that point you'll have enough experience to apply some of this author's insights.

But until now, to get an web form on Facebook, you've had to work with HTML. It was doable, but building your email list on Facebook should be easier.

It puts your AWeber form on your Facebook page in just a few clicks - take a look.

Just like installing an AWeber web form on a WordPress blog was possible before we announced our Web Form Widget for WordPress , it's possible to install a web form on a Facebook page without our app. However, the app makes the process a lot smoother.

Rather than copying and pasting HTML or Javascript, you just choose the form you want to install from a dropdown menu. You can swap forms just as easily if you want to make a change later.
